Muharram is the one of the auspicious festival of Islamic religion. It is celebrated with great joy. The first day of the festival commemorates the brutal assassination of Hazrat imam Husain Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad and his whole family at the battle of Karbala. Muharram is also observed as the first month of the Islamic Calendar. Thus, Muslim starts their lunar Hazrat timetable with the first day of the Muharram. Muharram is celebrated one of the four month recognized to be quite sacred, the other three months being Dhul-Qaeda, Dhul-Hijjat and Rajab. Muharram is very sacred and religious festival for Muslim over the planet. The date of Muharram does not remain consistent in the Gregorian calendar and changes each year.

Significance of Muharram

The holy month of Muharram is observed by all Muslims across the world. The month is the first of the twelve month I the Islamic calendar according denoting the Islamic New year. It is one of the four blessed months where in unlawful act are strictly prohibited, especially the shedding of blood. Even the literal meaning of Muharram is ‘Haram’ which means forbidden. The first ten days of the month are grieved by the Muslim to remember the brutal assassination of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Islam Hussain, his family and supporters. Moharram is great religious significance behind its observance.

Historical Importance of Moharram

The Islamic New Year is introduced with the sighting of the new moon. Moharram is considered the first month of the Islamic Calendar. This month is considered as the one of the four sacred months as mentioned by Allah in the holy Quran, the other three blessed being ZilQa’dah, Zil Hijjah and Rajab. It was on this First day of Moharram that Allah made the sky and the earth. Around the four month recognized sacrosanct, Moharram is the hugest and favoured with certain particular virtues.

The four months are respected as the holy in the Islamic Calendar the reward for the good deeds perform in this month are far greater than in other month. These months are far more heinous then engaging in sins other month. A person committing murder during any of these months would be required to pay more than the prescribed amount of blood money.

As expressed by Prophet Muhammad, do fast in the Allah month of Moharram is the best of the fasts besides the month of Ramadan. Salaat is the best (prayers), besides the Fardah (compulsory) Salaat is the Tahajjud salaat (performing in the midnight and before down). In other holy book also mentioned that a person fasting during Muharram would receive a reward of 30 fast for each fast observe. A person observing fast on the 10th day of Muharram is believed to receive a reward of 10000saints and the prize of 10000 individual performing Hajj and umrah.

On the tenth day of the Muharram the Hazrat imam Husain ali, grandson of prophet Muhammad, along with his family and the followers are killed in the war of karbala. Hence Muharram is the sacred festival of Islamic religion and remembers the death of Imam Husain. They Sacrifice for the cause of truth and justice so therefore people do fast on both 9th and 10th days of Muharram as recommended by Prophet Muhammad.

Muharram Fasting

Muharram is the first month of Islamic religion. This month is called the new month of the Islamic. This month is very sacred in Islamic Calendar where fighting is strictly prohibited. People do fast during this month to honour the massacred Imam Husain and his people in the battle of Karbala.

Fasting during the month of Muharram is of great merit in Islam, especially on the 10th day of the Prophet Muhammad stated though fasting on the 10th day of Muharram is of great merit, one should pray to Allah to accept the fast an exception for the sins committed in the previous year. Fasting on the day 9th day of the Muharram also highly recommended being sane. So the 9th and 10th day fast is very important for the Islamic community.

Prophet Muhammad recommended fasting on the 9th and 10th day of Muharram from the next year. This is done from the Jews and Christians. However, he died before the following year. The prophet also committed that Fasting during the month Muharram is the best fast after Ramadan.
